                <text>Max van Berchem, born 1863 in Geneva, was an orientalist, specialist in Islamic Archaeology and a photographer. He undertook research trips to Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Turkey.&lt;br /&gt;Between working in the Middle East he photographed many historically significant buildings in Switzerland during the late 19th and early 20th century. After the death of van Berchem these photographs were archived at the &lt;a href="https://www.nb.admin.ch/sammlungen/graphische_sammlung/01443/index.html"&gt;Federal Archives of historic monuments (FAHM)&lt;/a&gt; in 1921. The images in this collection are also accessible in better quality as high resolution TIFFs on &lt;a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:CH-NB-Max_van_Berchem"&gt;Wikimedia Commons&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;The photographs, notes, descriptions and correspondence documenting van Berchem's journeys and work in the Middle East constitute the archive Max van Berchem, housed in the Fondation Max van Berchem and in the Biblioth&amp;egrave;que Publique et Universitaire of Geneva. These images are not included in this collection.</text>

                <text>Major Lee Moorhouse of Pendleton, Oregon was an Indian Agent for the Umatilla Indian Reservation and a photographer. From 1888 to 1916 he produced over 9,000 images which document urban, rural, and Native American life in the Columbia Basin, and particularly Umatilla County, Oregon. So extensive and revealing are Moorhouse's images that his collection is one of the preeminent social history collections for Oregon. Special Collections &amp;amp; University Archives of the University of Oregon Libraries has a collection of 7000 images by Major Moorhouse.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Picturing the Cayuse, Walla Walla, and Umatilla Tribes is a collaborative project among the &lt;a href="http://www.tamastslikt.com/"&gt;Tam&amp;aacute;stslikt Cultural Institute (TCI)&lt;/a&gt; of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation , the &lt;a href="http://libweb.uoregon.edu/"&gt;University of Oregon (UO) Libraries&lt;/a&gt;, and &lt;a href="http://www.wiche.edu/"&gt;Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE)&lt;/a&gt;. Partial funding has been provided by the &lt;a href="http://www.nwacc.org/"&gt;Northwest Academic Computing Consortium&lt;/a&gt; (NWACC).</text>
