He undertook research trips to Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Turkey. Between working in the Middle East he photographed many historically significant buildings in Switzerland during the late 19th and early 20th century. After the death of van Berchem these photographs were archived at the <a href="https://www.nb.admin.ch/sammlungen/graphische_sammlung/01443/index.html">Federal Archives of historic monuments (FAHM)</a> in 1921.
