Description
This collection contains historical photos of the organization „Wandervogel. Schweizerischer Bund für alkoholfreie Jugendwanderungen“. Wandervogel is the name adopted by a popular movement of German youth groups from 1896 onward. The name can be translated as rambling, hiking, or wandering bird (differing in meaning from "Zugvogel" or migratory bird) and the ethos was to shake off the restrictions of society and get back to nature and freedom.
The photo collection is one (call number F_5000) of three Wandervogel image collections in the holding of the Swiss Social Archives (German: Schweizerisches Sozialarchiv, French: Archives Sociales Suisse) in Zurich, a historical archive, academic library, collection of documentation and research facility specialising in social issues and social movements. The photos have been taken by various unknown photographers, identified by Swiss Social Archives, and are free of known copyright restrictions.
