Description

Max van Berchem, born 1863 in Geneva, was an orientalist, specialist in Islamic Archaeology and a photographer. He undertook research trips to Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Turkey.
Between working in the Middle East he photographed many historically significant buildings in Switzerland during the late 19th and early 20th century. After the death of van Berchem these photographs were archived at the Federal Archives of historic monuments (FAHM) in 1921. The images in this collection are also accessible in better quality as high resolution TIFFs on Wikimedia Commons.
The photographs, notes, descriptions and correspondence documenting van Berchem's journeys and work in the Middle East constitute the archive Max van Berchem, housed in the Fondation Max van Berchem and in the Bibliothèque Publique et Universitaire of Geneva. These images are not included in this collection.
